Spring Break Travel Health: What to Pack (and When to Be Seen)

February 17, 2026

Spring break is a time to relax, recharge, and travel – whether you’re heading to the beach, visiting family, or exploring a new city. But nothing disrupts a trip faster than getting sick or injured away from home.

Before you zip up your suitcase, make sure you’re prepared with a few health essentials, and know when it’s time to seek care.

Travel Health Essentials: What to Pack

A small health kit can go a long way. Consider packing:

  1. Prescription Medications

Bring enough for your entire trip (plus a few extra days), and keep them in their original labeled bottles in your carry-on bag.

  1. Basic First Aid Supplies

Bandages, blister pads, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen), and allergy medication are smart additions.

  1. Sunscreen & After-Sun Care

Even on cloudy days, UV exposure adds up. Choose SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours — especially if you’re swimming or sweating.

  1. Hand Sanitizer & Disinfecting Wipes

Travel often means crowded airports, hotels, and attractions. Hand hygiene helps prevent colds, flu, and stomach viruses.

  1. Hydration Support

Reusable water bottles and electrolyte packets are especially helpful for warm-weather destinations.

Common Spring Break Health Issues

Travel can introduce new foods, climates, and activity levels – all of which can impact your body. We commonly see:

  • Sunburn and heat exhaustion
  • Stomach bugs or food-related illness
  • Dehydration
  • Respiratory illnesses (cold, flu, COVID, RSV)
  • Minor injuries like sprains, cuts, and strains

Being proactive helps, but knowing when to seek care is just as important.

When to Be Seen

You should consider being seen if you experience:

  • A fever lasting more than 2–3 days
  • Severe sore throat, ear pain, or sinus pressure
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Signs of dehydration (dizziness, dry mouth, dark urine)
  • Painful sunburn with blistering
  • An injury that causes swelling, bruising, or difficulty moving

If you return home from your trip not feeling better — or symptoms worsen — don’t wait it out.

Before You Travel

If you’re already feeling under the weather before your trip, it’s often best to be evaluated before you leave. Addressing symptoms early can help prevent complications while you’re away.
