Spring is right around the corner and as much as we’re looking forward to flowers in bloom, sunshine and bright green grass, we’re dreading the start of allergy season! Did you know millions of people suffer from seasonal allergies also known as hay fever and allergic rhinitis. Symptoms of allergies include sneezing, congestion and a persistent runny nose! Not to worry, there are a number of things you can do to manage your seasonal allergies and so you can enjoy the joys of springtime!
Here are some tips to reduce your exposure to allergens:
- The best time to go outside is after a good rain! On dry, windy days, stay inside.
- Avoid those pesky outdoor chores that stir up allergens like mowing the lawn, pulling weeds and gardening.
- Don’t hang laundry outside to try- pollen can stick to your sheets and towels.
- If you’re outside doing chores, wear a mask. Changing out of clothes immediately and taking a shower will help rinse your hair and skin from pollens you were exposed to.
- Keep your doors and windows closed overnight when pollen counts are high.
- Use air conditioning in your home and car and use a dehumidifier at home.
- Using a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter in your bedroom and vacuum cleaner can make a difference.
There are several types of medications that can help ease your allergy symptoms. If you’ve taken them in the past, this is your reminder to get stocked up and start taking them before spring is in full swing! Talk to your doctor to find the right medicines based on your symptoms, many medications exist, and they will be able to help you find the best choice for your needs!
